There’s not many things that say ‘1970’s Football Fan’ better than a good old Bomber Jacket.

And even as I write this post new things spring out from this advertisement published in Shoot! magazine back in November, 1978.

The most recent of these being the spelling of ‘Trucker‘ in the main part of the ad. That’s if it is meant to be ‘Trucker‘ and not ‘Truker‘ as it states.

The reason I am open to this suggestion is that, later in the ad, is the following statement:

‘This is currently one of the most successful sports supporter jackets in SWEDEN.’

Fair enough. So ‘TRUKER‘ could in fact be an IKEA-like name for this Bomber Jacket rather than it being a jacket specifically related to lorry-driving ‘TRUCKERS‘.

But, and there’s always a ‘but’, it goes on to confuse further in the advertisement with the following sentences:

‘TRUKER JACKETS are manufactured in true team colours…’ – again, the IKEA-like moniker.

‘The “TRUCKER” is showerproof, guaranteed windproof…..’ – this time the lorry driving version of the word.

So confusion abounds.

Then we get to the item itself, and in particular, those sleeve panels!

It’s not absolutely clear if they are stitched to the jacket, as the middle picture of the other team sleeves seem to suggest it could come in loose format. In which case, do you sew them on yourself? Or maybe they are velcro-backed? (Was Velcro around then??)

Last thing to comment on is the claim that the jacket is ‘lightweight and easy to wash’ considering the components that make it up.

  • Nylon
  • Polyester
  • Wadding (nondescript – could be anything really!)
  • Heavy knitted trim (Heavy mind, none of your light knitted shite!)
  • Not forgetting that rather fetching sleeve panel

You try putting that monster into a washing machine back in those days and then watching as your ‘heavy knitted trims’ stretched beyond recognition on the clothes line!

Still, really big in SWEDEN.. viva la TRUCKERS….TRUKERS….whatever…..!
